Background of Lhasa
Lhasa, also known as “Land of the Gods” is more than 1,300 years old. It is the capital city of Tibet, an autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China. This holy Buddhist city is the economic, political, cultural, historical and hospitality centre of Tibet.
Where is Lhasa
Together with La Paz in Bolivia and Leadville in Colorado USA, Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. Lhasa’s altitude / elevation is 3656 meters (11,990 feet). Geographically, it is in the centre of Tibetan Plateau, on the northern slopes of the Himalayas and in a valley next to Lhasa River.
What to see in and around Lhasa
A trip to Lhasa will most certainly include visits to the various Lhasa temples and monasteries. First, we have the Potala Palace, the winter residence for former Dalai Lamas and the most iconic landmark in Tibet. A short distance away from Potala Palace, we have Norbulingka Palace, the summer residence of the past Dalai Lamas. Next up is Jokhang Temple, the most strategically-located temple and one of the holiest temples in the region. Considered the second most important temple after the Jokhang Temple, we have Ramoche Temple.
Around Lhasa, you can visit the famous Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery.
Weather and Temperature in Lhasa
The busiest and warmest months in Lhasa are the Summer, from June to August, where the average temperature is between 15-17 degrees Celsius (57-62 degrees Fahrenheit). Nevertheless, these are also the months with the highest rainfall.
Autumn months of September and October are comfortable and cool with temperatures averaging between 9 to 14 degrees Celsius (49 – 57 degrees Fahrenheit).
The winter months of December and January are coldest, with average temperatures going below 0 degrees Celsius (31 degrees Fahrenheit).
From March to May, the temperatures are once again cool, ranging from 5 to 13 degrees Celsius (42 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit).
