Tibet Travel Permit. Tibet Visa

Almost anyone can travel to Tibet, as long as you have the necessary permits and valid documents. If you book your Tibet trip with us, we will help you with all the necessary application for your Tibet Travel Permit.

Here are some of the most commonly-asked questions regarding a Tibet Travel Permit:

Who Needs a Tibet Travel Permit?

Any visitor who does not hold a China Passport, needs to have a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet. A Tibet travel permit needs to be applied and obtained in advance before entering Tibet.

Does having a valid China Visa allow me to enter Tibet?

No, a valid China Visa alone is not enough to get you to Tibet. Any foreigner (non-China-passport holder) needs to have both a valid China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit before they can enter Tibet through Lhasa.

How to get a Tibet Travel Permit?

  • Book a Tibet tour or plan a Tibet trip with our company
  • Send us the copies of your passport and China Visa

Please note that foreign visitors are not allowed to travel in Tibet independently. Foreigners must be accompanied at least by a local tour guide.

What is needed to apply for a Tibet Travel Permit?

You will need:

  • A passport with at least 6-month validity from the date of planned entry into Tibet
  • A China Visa
  • A confirmed tour itinerary with a registered Tibet / Chinese Travel Agency

Will my Tibet Travel Permit application be approved?

We guarantee you will get the permit as long as you provide us with the copies of the valid documents required.

When should I apply for my Tibet Travel Permit?

As early as possible. The moment you have confirmed your tour dates and itinerary with us, we will immediately apply all permits for you.

  • If you intend to enter Tibet by train, you’ll need to give us the copies of your passport and China Visa at least 7 days prior to your departure.
  • If you’re entering Tibet by flight, Tibet, it’s advisable to send the copies of your passport and China Visa at least 15 days prior to your arrival. This is because we need to mail you the original permit before you board your flight.

Please note that if you are travelling to other parts of Tibet outside of Lhasa, you should apply at least 1 month in advance.

What is the difference between a Tibet Travel Permit, an Alien’s Travel Permit and a Military Permit?

  • A Tibet Travel Permit allows you to travel only within the capital of Lhasa in Tibet.
  • In addition to the Tibet Travel Permit, you will also need the Alien’s Travel Permit if your tour covers places out of Tibet. These places include Shigatse (Mount Everest, Rongbuk Monastery), Gyantse (Palcho Monastery), Tsetang (Samye Monastery) and Nyingchi.
  • In addition to the Tibet Travel Permit and Alien’s Travel Permit, you will need the Military Permit if you’re going to the Ngari Region for Mount Kailash, Lake Mansarovar and Tsaparang.

Rest assured that as long as your tour includes those places out of Lhasa, we will also apply the Alien’s Travel Permit & the Military Permit for you.

We will apply it with your passport and Tibet Travel Permit upon your arrival. The Alien’s Travel Permit can only be applied after you enter Tibet.

When will the Tibet Travel Permit be checked?

  • If you’re entering Tibet by train, a copy of the Tibet Travel Permit will be checked at your departing train station.
  • If you’re entering Tibet by flight, the original permit will be checked at your departure and arrival airports.
  • Occasionally, your permit might also be checked when you’re checking in at a hotel in Tibet

Other things to take note

  • You can only use your Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet through the first city that’s stated in your tour itinerary. In our case, as all our tours start from Lhasa city, it will be the only point of entry you can use your Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet.
  • Plan your Tibet trip as early as you can. We need time to apply, submit and receive all the necessary permits for your Tibet trip.
